May Update

By | Uncategorised | No Comments

I can’t believe we are less than a month away from the beginning of this years  GOSD. Early spring fishing reports were very encouraging with Chinooks testing tackle in the western end of the lake. As we approach June, activity is starting to pick up on the north shore with reports of screaming drags east of Toronto.

I don’t know where to start when talking about this year’s event but I guess we should start at the top. In the past, the Great Grand Prize Toyota 4Runner has been used for promotional purposes. This year we will be keeping the 2019 4Runner as close to absolutely brand new as possible by using it primarily for display purposes.

Double the money for 2nd place and 50% more for 3rd place along with an extra $100 if you’re fortunate enough to end up in the 6th to 10th position for each of the 7 weeks of the Derby. Thanks to our new and returning sponsors all 10 positions will be rewarded with great prizing in 2019.

Our new sponsor Garmin has made it possible for Charter Boat/ Boat ticket holders who enter the heaviest 3 Chinooks over the course of the 50 day event to win bonus cash and an exceptional prize from Garmin.  Click  HERE  for the exciting details!

Having trouble landing a Raymarine leader board worthy salmon? That doesn’t mean you can’t be a $$ winner. This year take a creative photograph of any size Chinook salmon that you’ve caught along with a Freedom Tackle Cutbait Trolling Lure. Post your photo on Instagram or Facebook and tag @greatontariosalmonderby and @freedomtackle.  You also need to use the following hashtags #GOSD19; #freedomtackle; #howdoyouroll and #herringcutbait.    At the conclusion of the Derby our panel of judges will pick the best 3 photographs and they will win $1,500 , $500, or $250.   Click HERE to learn more about this awesome addition to the Derby.

Also new for 2019 will be Berkley’s Big Fish Sunday! Every Sunday during the Derby if you enter the heaviest Chinook between 9am and 8 pm you will win a $1,000 prize package courtesy of Berkley.

Don’t forget purchase your tickets on line before June 14th and be eligible to win the $670 prize package.  Click HERE to buy your tickets!

As always thank you to all of our sponsors and participants…the countdown is on to GOSD19!

April Update

By | Uncategorised | No Comments

I’m sure as I write this several of you might be trolling the western basin hoping to find some spring kings. The Easter weekend rains however might convince more of us to tune up tackle, spool some reels and tie some of our favourite flies.

On Saturday, April 20th I attended  the Pro Tackle Walleye/ Salmon seminar in Belleville where Al Van Heusen and Pro Tackle proprietor Stacy were kind enough to let me speak about the 2019 GOSD. As I traveled to the walleye capitol of Ontario this morning I was concerned as to how much of the audience would in fact be salmon trollers given how popular the Bay of Quinte is for walleye. Much to my surprise the packed house was a 50/50 split.

The 2019 prize page has been updated highlighted by added prizing and more cash. We’ve doubled the 2nd place weekly money to $2,000 and have added $500 to 3rd place. 6TH place through 10th has increased by $100 and great prizing that previously ended at 5th place now extends to all weekly top 10 winners.  If you haven’t already please click here to take a look at our new prize page so you can see exactly what is up for grabs this summer

If you’re a Charter Boat/ Boat ticket holder a beautiful Garmin Quatix 5 Sapphire watch that has extraordinary capabilities will accompany the cash awarded for 1st ,2nd and 3rd place. Retail value of each watch is $1,100.

Thank you to all the north shore associations and their volunteers who are guarding and caring for our future Chinooks in multiple pens across the province. I truly hope Mother Nature will be kind to us until they’re released.

On a sad note, for those of you who aren’t aware the former Chairman & CEO  of Canadian National Sportsmen’s Shows, Walter Oster passed away suddenly in March of 2019. Walter was determined to bring a salmon fishing event back to Ontario and 23 years ago under the Toronto Sportsmen’s Show came the very first Great Ontario Salmon Derby. This exciting annual summer event has brought joy to a great majority of us enthusiastic salmon anglers and has distributed cash, cars, boats, trips and valuable prizes with the help of our generous sponsors to hundreds of participants from Ontario and around the world. All while supporting the Lake Ontario Salmon fishery.
Thank you Walter.

GOSD 2019 Update- March 22, 2019

By | Uncategorised | No Comments

The first sign of spring has passed and what a great Toronto Sportsmen’s Show it was. I want to thank the Halton Hills Region Salmon & Trout Association and the Ontario Sportfishing Guides Association for granting me the opportunity to speak about the 2019 GOSD at their AGMs.

I know you’re waiting patiently for the prizing to be posted and it will be very soon. We are very pleased to announce that all our 2018 sponsors will be supporting this great summer event again this year.

If you’re a Charter Boat/Boat ticket purchaser the news gets even better, GARMIN has come aboard with great prizing, cash bonuses for vessels with built in GARMIN electronics and an opportunity for OSGA members to purchase GARMIN electronics.

Another new wrinkle included in this years Derby will be the FREEDOM TACKLE Photo Contest and everyone who lands any sized salmon and owns a FREEDOM CUT BAIT PLUG will be able to enter. The 3 best or most interesting photos entered over the course of the 50 days of the Derby will win $1,500,$500 or $250. Details on how to enter your photo will be announced soon.

We sold the fewest number of single tickets ever at this years Toronto Sportsmen’s Show. WHY? because everyone heard how much tax free cash the 2018 SUPER ticket holders went home with last year on Awards Day. Don’t forget $60 from every SUPER ticket sold goes into the jackpot. I’ll eat a piece of cut bait if this years jackpot doesn’t surpass last years totals.  TICKETS ARE NOW AVAILABLE FOR SALE ONLINE.  CLICK HERE TO BUY YOUR SUPER TICKET TODAY!

Junior Anglers Day will be Saturday July 13 for anglers 8-16 years of age that have a special Jr. Anglers Day $25 ticket , covered under a Family ticket,Charter Boat/ Boat ticket or their own single ticket. Remember everyone on the vessel must have a valid GOSD ticket. $900 in tackle gift cards courtesy of JB’s Fishing Depot, Gagnon’s Sports and Natural Sports will go to the Junior Angler that enters the heaviest Chinook.  Oh yes, and a voucher for  PIZZA PIZZA for a year.

February Update

By | Uncategorised | No Comments

The days are flying by and the Derby countdown has started.

The Toronto Sportsmen’s Show is just around the corner and I’m really hoping to see many of you at the GOSD booth. I will be at the show daily and would be pleased to speak with you regarding this years event that promises to be a beauty.

Many of the Derby’s sponsors will be attending the Toronto Sportsmen’s Show and it’s a great opportunity for all of us to thank them for their support.

If you want to experience the awesome Islander products you’ll be able to try them in the GOSD booth while fighting different species hooked up to a simulator.

The fully loaded Great Grand Prize courtesy of the Ontario TOYOTA Dealers Association will be on display. The MERCURY 9.9 four stroke draw prize, a SCOTTY high performance electric down rigger and our new sponsor YETI the best in the business for coolers and drink ware will also have product in our booth.

Whatever you do don’t forget Valentines Day. Remember all the extra time your significant other gave you last year to chase Chinooks during the GOSD.

Better build up some brownie points for this year.  Getting a romantic gift might help.

Nothing says I love you more than a new reel, flasher/fly combo or the new FREEDOM trolling bait.

These products and all your salmon tackle needs are available at JB’S FISHING DEPOT, GAGNON’S SPORTS, PRO TACKLE Bellville or NATURAL SPORTS in Kitchener.

HINTS: Every sponsor from the 2018 GOSD is returning and as far as additional  2019 prizing we are pleased to announce that ……

Sorry I have to go and shovel the snow!

Happy New Year!

By | Uncategorised | No Comments

I just wanted to wish all the Great Ontario Salmon Derby enthusiasts a Happy New Year.

I hope Santa brought you all the flashers, flies and spoons that were on your list.

The count down has started to the 23rd GOSD that will start on Saturday June 29th.   We wanted include the July 1st long weekend as part of the first week of the Derby, hopefully some of us will get that extra day on the pond to try and secure a spot on the Raymarine Top 10 Leaderboard

Also from June 29 to July 7, 2019 is license free fishing week in Ontario and it will give new salmon trollers the opportunity to experience this exciting sport fishing.

If you’re a novice the best way to be introduced to salmon fishing is on a Charter boat. Make sure the Charter you choose has a Great Ontario Salmon Derby ticket. If the Charter you hire has registered with the Derby all its clients are eligible to win any of the $270,000 in cash and prizes that are available.

Great news for our Eastern Ontario participants, Bill Cunnell and Rhonda Turk from Wellers Bay Campground will be hosting our most easterly weigh-in station in 2019. Boat launching and docking will be available at their weigh-in station. Our other 9  fantastic weigh-in stations will remain the same as last year.

I’m afraid you’re going to hear this in repetition over the course of the year but I hope it will help ensure that we can get the proper top 10 leaders on our leader board in a correct and timely fashion each night. I know how difficult it is to make the leaderboard and we want to make sure you get the credit you deserve when your entry is top 10 worthy.

NEW for 2019

1) Make sure at the weigh-in station that you complete all the required information on the entry form and its LEGIBLE.

2) Make sure you leave the weigh-in station with your completed LEGIBLE copy of your entry form and KEEP IT. (The weigh-in station will also keep a copy)

3)  With your cell phone take a photograph of your LEGIBLE completed entry form.

4)  After the Raymarine leader board is updated at the end of each fishing day if your  entry isn’t posted on the leader board and your entry is heavier than the 10 place           salmon, send a LEGIBLE photograph of your entry form to gosd@sportshows.ca so we can verify your entry and correct the leaderboar

Charter Boat Ticket/ Boat Ticket

We‘ve had many requests over the last few years regarding a ticket that covers all  persons on vessels for the duration of the GOSD that are not classified as charters for hire. To clear up any misconceptions you may purchase a Charter Boat /Boat ticket at the SAME price as a Charter Boat . However you may NOT request a listing on the GOSD Charter Boat page unless you are a member of the OSGA or have a business number proving you are a Charter for hire.

By now I’m sure you’re saying enough…where’s the prize list for 2019.

Sorry we’re still in conversation with several new and exciting partners and we  aren’t quite ready to make it public yet. We can tell you that a great majority of our amazing 2018 sponsors are once again supporting this incredible summer salmon fishing event .
